Coconut Development Board Celebrated Coconut Day at Purba Medinipur, West Bengal


Coconut Development Board, State Centre Kolkata, West Bengal has organized World Coconut Day at Kolaghat Panchayet Samiti Hall, Kolaghat, Purba Medinipur on 2nd September 2012. Sri Biplab Roy Chowdhury, MLA, Paskura-2, Purba Medinipur, was Chief Guest of the function inaugurated the celebration by lighting the lamp. Sri Asit Banerjee, Sabhapati, Kolaghat Panchayet Samiti presided over the function. Sri R.K. Das, Deputy Director, CDB, State Centre Kolkata delivered the welcome address and explained the objective and importance of the observation of the World Coconut Day besides creating awareness for scientific cultivation of coconut for enhancing productivity in the region which has good potentials for cultivation. The District Horticulture Officer, Assistant Director of Agriculture and Block Development Officer were also among those who addressed the gathering. More than 100 farmers and officials participated in the function.

In the inaugural address the Chief Guest advised the farmers of the state to take assistance from the Coconut Development Board for scientific cultivation and modern technologies of the coconut cultivation in the region. He also requested to the Board for supplying the dwarf variety seedling for his area for better and early production.

In the presidential address the Guest described the multipurpose use of coconut and its by-products and requested the Board for giving proper training to the farmers for scientific cultivation. He also requested the Board for giving suitable equipments and training to the farmers for taking proper care and pest control measure.

Local Block Development Officer also addressed the gathering and appreciated the Board for organizing the celebration in the region. He also stressed the need to take up the new area for the implementation of the board’s scheme in the locality. Sri Babul Chakraborty, Stenographer, CDB, State Centre Kolkata proposed the Vote of Tanks. The inaugural session was followed by Technical session.

Dr. K. Ghorai, District Horticulture Officer, Department of Horticulture, Govt. of West Bengal, gave a detailed lecture in respect of nursery management, and agro-technique for scientific production of coconut for achieving better returns.

Sri Nabagopal Barman, Assistant Director, Department of Agriculture briefed about pest and disease control measure on coconut. He also assured to take due initiative for implementation of the Board’s scheme in his area of operation.

Sri R.K. Das, Deputy Director, CDB. described in detail about the schemes and assistance being offered by the Board for coconut growers.

The programme end followed by a working lunch.
